How to Reduce Blood Creatinine Level in Diet

Creatinine is a substance that is produced during the body's natural activity (metabolism). Under normal circumstances, your kidneys should be able to filter and pass this substance out of your body.  If the kidneys start to become diseased, for whatever reason, the level of creatinine rises in the blood stream. It is the level in the blood stream that is usually measured in renal function tests and I presume that it is this level that you are referring to.

The serum creatinine is a common blood test that gives us an estimate of kidney function. The normal value of creatinine is linked to muscle mass. A very muscular person is allowed to have a higher normal creatinine compared with the average individual. A 1.8 is generally high for even a very muscular athlete. A 1.3 to 1.5 would not be for many patients. Serum creatinines over 2 are generally reason for real concern. Also, simple dehydration can cause some elevation. Prolonged high blood pressure, or hypertension, is the most common cause of kidney damage. We treat high blood pressure to prevent kidney disease, cardiac disease and stroke.

There are several ways that you can reduce your creatinine levels, including changing your diet, making some lifestyle modifications, taking medications, and participating in medical therapy.

1. Limit your sodium intake. Excessive sodium can cause an unhealthy amount of fluid retention and may result in high blood pressure. Both of these issues could result in high creatinine levels.

2. Keep an eye on your protein intake. Avoid foods that are rich in protein as much as possible. Red meat and dairy products can be especially bad for you.

3. Avoid phosphorus-rich foods. Your kidneys may have a hard time processing phosphorus-rich foods, particularly if you have high creatinine levels.[3] Because of this, you should try to avoid foods like:

Pumpkin and squash, cheese, fish, shellfish, nuts, pork, low fat dairy products, and soybeans.

4. Limit the amount of potassium you consume. When dealing with kidney issues, try to avoid eating foods with a high amount of potassium because that potassium can accumulate in the body if your kidneys cannot process it correctly.

5.Stay away from creatine supplements. Since creatinine is a waste product of creatine, taking creatine supplements will result in a greater build-up of creatinine in your blood.
