Chronic Renal Failure Patients with Atherosclerosis in pre Dialysis

May 31 despite the adoption of internal carotid artery - media thickness (CA-IMT) is increased in hemodialysis patients can be found in the progress of atherosclerosis, but its causes have not yet been fully elucidated.

To this end, Japan, Osaka City University Graduate School of metabolic, endocrine and molecular medicine department Shoji T and his colleagues on hemodialysis and renal failure in patients with chronic renal failure, the role of CA-IMT were evaluated.

The researchers used high-resolution B-mode ultrasound examination of 110 cases of pre-dialysis patients with chronic renal failure (CRF group), 345 cases of hemodialysis (HD group) and 302 healthy control subjects of CA-IMT compared. None of these subjects had diabetes, and comparable in age and gender.

They found that, compared with healthy controls, CRF and HD groups CA-IMT increase, and this difference between the two groups was not statistically CA-IMT. In the HD group, no significant correlation between hemodialysis time and CA-IMT. Multiple regression analysis showed that all subjects, renal failure is the CA-IMT increase was significantly related factors, and the hemodialysis treatment is irrelevant, and this factor is not dependent on age, gender, blood pressure, smoking, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and non-HDL cholesterol levels.

Shoji conclusion, these results suggest that in patients with chronic renal failure before starting hemodialysis treatment appears arterial wall thickening, suggesting that hemodialysis patients with atherosclerosis is not caused by hemodialysis treatment, but because of renal failure and / or secondary to renal failure, metabolic abnormalities.
